ROADSIDE GUIDES
What to do if your vehicle breaks down on a motorway
UK motorway breakdown safety steps, when to contact emergency services and when to request recovery.
Published by the OTTERS editorial team. Updated 20 October 2026.
1. Move to a place of safety
If the vehicle is still mobile, try to reach a safe place. Never stop in a live lane unless unavoidable. Turn on hazard warning lights.
2. Leave the vehicle if safe
Where a safe exit is available, get out on the side away from traffic and stand well behind a safety barrier. Do not stand alongside the vehicle.
3. Get emergency assistance
If you are in a live lane or in immediate danger, call 999. Give the motorway, direction and nearest marker or junction.
4. Arrange recovery when safe
Once you are safe, tell OTTERS the motorway, direction, location and vehicle condition. Operators need the precise access point before accepting the job.
